The drivers worst hit in 2010 were those aged between 51-55 who saw the highest increase in comprehensive insurance premiums, up by 43.2%.

The cost of adding a driver (who is not your spouse) to your policy also became more expensive. It is cheaper for women to add another driver to their policy, at around £133 less than men.

The steepest premium increase based on location was seen by residents of Manchester, hitting almost 50% over the course of the year. This brought the average cost of comprehensive cover from around £490 to a massive £970.

The cost of insurance for young drivers, who have struggled to get on the road at all as prices have risen, saw a lower increase. But prices for 17-20 year-olds still rose an average 38.4%.

It pushes the cost for comprehensive cover for this age group to £2,151 - more than the cost of many first cars.
